Haywood Foundation staff attend World Confederation for Physical Therapy

The Haywood Foundation has recently supported two members of staff, Kay Stevenson (Consultant Physiotherapist/Senior Knowledge Mobilisation Fellow) and Steve Nawoor (Extended Scope Physiotherapist), to attend the international World Confederation for Physical Therapy conference.

The conference was formed in 1951 and has 113 member countries. It is an opportunity to share internationally the development of the physiotherapy profession and this year’s conference was held in Cape Town, South Africa, between 2-4 July 2017.

Steve Nawoor contributed to a debate on advanced practice and prescribing. It was clear from the debate that the UK leads the world in physiotherapists having prescribing rights and most leading nations looked to the UK for leadership on this issue.

Steve also presented the work of the musculoskeletal interface service and the contribution that advanced practice and extended scope physiotherapists make to our world class service at the Haywood Hospital.

Kay Stevenson presented work on evidence into practice groups. This received global interest particularly from America and Denmark. Kay also presented the implementation work around stratified care for low back pain.

Both Steve and Kay said that they benefited hugely from the conference and it was very evident to them both that physiotherapy in the UK, and particularly in SSOTP, is at the forefront of both professional advanced practice and research.
